Laguna Beach, CA, 1999: Heather, Screen Name Sapient4
I lied to my parents, said I was going to California
to look at colleges, and they paid to get me to LAX,
where my internet girlfriend picked me up. Straight
from the plane, we saw High Art, hands dancing
on the arm rest during sex scenes—Sheedy’s convincing,
wet objectives, all spit and tongue sounds, left in, loud—
and that night, a blackout. Unable even to see each other’s
silhouettes, we passed marbles mouth to mouth.
I have been lucky never to have been ashamed
of what I want and on the last day: San Diego Pride.
My first. She touched me in public, at the taper
of the small of my back. She laughed at my open
mouth, laughed harder as I gaped at a shirt that said
let go of my ears, I know what I’m doing.
