portion of the artwork for Justin Hyde's poem

in the car with my 11-year-old son
Justin Hyde

bob seger
on a midnight corner
working up courage
to approach a woman

i reach up
turn the volume down

“need to
tell you something”

“what, dad?”

“someday
you’re going to like a girl
woman maybe

like her
so much

she won’t
like you back

it’s going to hurt

going to feel like
you’re dying

but you’re not
dying
it goes
away”

i squeeze
his thigh

reach up

& let bob
finish
his song.
