Jay Sizemore’s Comments

These poems are part of a larger experiment I undertook over the course of three months, in which I allowed my writing to be directly influenced by my social media feed. These pieces are directly influenced by the Facebook newsfeed, and thus, are named “facebook poems.” My process for these pieces was to scroll through the Facebook feed and take inspiration from postings, trying not to limit myself by making sure the images/correlations/word choices made logical sense. It was sort of like using an Internet Ouija board. I found through the process that poems could make juxtapositions that I never would have come up with on my own, and that through these strange image comparisons, deeper meanings would emerge that readers could interpret many ways. Once I got into the groove of writing this way, it was addicting, and hard to make myself stop. I have a full-length manuscript of these poems, and another that I am working on of poems taken from my Twitter feed.
