Shaun Turner’s Comments
Sometimes, I carry a small drugstore notebook and write down fragments of interesting things: overheard comments or something I’d seen. “Planting by Design” was first a weird Frankenplant someone grafted together, for sale as a “butterfly tree.” “A Naming Story” came from a joke overheard at a bar about Emily Dickinson being in some mom’s birth plan, and somehow this became a story. And “After a Couple Years …” came from this talkative grandma with whom I’d occasionally share a bus stop. For me, the process always starts at a line or an image. I tried to find the characters and then the story comes from them.
