Sergio Ortiz’s Comments
I wrote “Rain and Toothless Angels” because I couldn’t understand how it is that people have enough money to waste buying useless, expensive things in the malls. It doesn’t feel right. To me not even all the rain can be considered “cleansing,” and I get the feeling our dead are rolling in their graves disgusted. I don’t think they would or could agree with all this materialism. There is something much greater to life than the accumulation of wealth. In the White House, there is too much talk about money and not enough talk about the environment, too much hidden racism and not enough equality and justice.
“Amazing Microcosm” is an environmental poem. I am trying to advocate a return to nature, much like what I experienced in the ’60s during the sexual revolution. I lived in a commune in New Mexico during those years. Those were happy times.
