Daddy was an atheist. He hung
a sign in the barn that said:
We’ll get along fine,
as soon as you realize
I’m God.

Mama was Catholic. Crossed
herself before yelling,
muttered Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
at least six times a day.

She used to tell us
she didn’t believe in atheists
until the day she gave birth
to my oldest sister.
She asked Daddy to pray.
He said, To who?
