Kelly Boyker’s Comments

With the exception of “Defenestration,” these poems are fictional (nonconfessional) and oftentimes research based. Before writing a poem, I spend a lot of time just being the protagonist and/or antagonist, imagining his/her surroundings, what the world smells like, whom they have touched, and who has touched them.  I then write a very lengthy first draft and eventually chisel the thing down to find the poem. Sometimes lightning strikes and I am successful, though most often I fail.
