Meg Pokrass’s Comments

For me, the creative process studied as a young actress remains invaluable. Motivation of a character is the starting point. How that person gets (or doesn’t get) what they want is often the story. What does the character want? Why? Where has the character just been before the scene/story starts? To help make it real, I use sense memory: taste, touch, smell, sound, sight. As I start to trick myself and feel what the character is experiencing, the story or poem takes on its own momentum.

I start with way too many words, then edit and edit. It can take a day, weeks, or months to get it right.
