Lullaby (Portrait of Madame Roulin)
Vincent van Gogh, 1889

Joseph R. Trombatore

Rock & roll of schist & prism
ice cubes melting on our tongues

refracting a razor’s edge of lightning
strikes
raspy whispers of hungry sparrows

between our teeth; the angle & hum
of whitewall to engine

jettisoned dreams graceful
as the prayers of swans

leaves of Brahms on piano keys
the rhythmic breath of each day

as it dies; the coins we cover
our eyes with & sleep
