Seven Yesterdays and Todays
Suzanne Ondrus

Yesterday I cradled coconuts.
Today the Harmattan sprayed everything red.

Today is a fine day.
Yesterday the dog shat outside my window.

Yesterday a truck filled with coal tumbled.
Today cornmeal ground round and round.

Today you cannot see the sky.
Yesterday something inside me fell.

Yesterday a child was lowered into the ground.
Today I see Baobab leaves shine.

Today my basket is half full.
Yesterday a princess waited up the hill.

Yesterday chickens were out in the street.
Today a cry came and I held it tight.
