Miriam N. Kotzin’s Comments

Much of the time I write formal poetry rather than free verse. I believe that my writing in forms has an influence on the other work I do, developing the musical qualities of my poetry. Because I write both, each time I write a poem I have to decide whether it will be in free verse or have a strict metrical and rhyming pattern. “Second Nature” in its earlier versions was two long stanzas, rather than these tercets.
