the shuttle drivers
daniel joseph

we weren’t expecting to be made shuttle drivers & came clean about our game right away: we told them that we were busting & lost & had really just come for the restroom on rumors of it not needing a key. that we had no idea how to get from here to there and back, which seemed to be what the shuttle was meant to do. that we weren’t strong enough to load everybody’s bags. but they laughed & said that was fine—it was all fine. the jobs were still ours: we were the shuttle drivers now. they said too many folks were just looking to get from here to there without any of the mess-in-between. we would be good at helping with that. we asked, like anybody would, what mess-in-between they were talking about? what help we would be? but they just threw us the keys & said to head out whenever we wanted & that the more people we could get on the shuttle the more people would be on it & with more & more people, there’s always a chance of finding some new shuttle drivers if we found we weren’t really shuttle drivers, after all.

the airport shuttle is always more interesting when you are racing to retrace its steps after finding the nearest gas station & rushing to return the rental car.
