On That Stray Cat from 2022
Grant Frazier

Hey, did that lady ever text an update
About that bony dying cat we found,
The one we wrapped in the quilt my
Mom made for you, the quilt we got
Snugged up in on my 2001 Sequoia
When we watched Betelgeuse and
I thought it’d finally up and blow?

Remember how we split up? You bought tuna,
I nestled her in that big box in the garage,
Aimed the space heater at her ratty coat—
She shivered all jittery, no strength to run,
Remember how we sat there until morning,
Six days before our three years were up?
How we saw our clock was running out,
But we spent our final weary goodwill
On that matted frozen cat’s ninth life?

This one speaks for itself. And to my ex, if you read this, let me know if you ever got an update on that cat!
