Gary Sloboda’s Comments

These are experimental prose poems, a form I’ve been working with for the last couple of years. The intent with these pieces was to create a series of poems addressing bigger, abstract topics—virtue, disorder, betrayal—by utilizing a kind of collage technique that follows a loose lyrical thread which hits home by the end of the poem. They are called “songs” to highlight or play with that tension between the sometimes disjunctive collage, on the one hand, and the lyrical/evocative sense, on the other. Aside from that technical description, the inspiration for these poems is everyday life.
