Couple at the Next Table
Susan H. Case
He fawns
over her like
she’s a pretty bauble
in the property clerk’s office
something
lost and
fondled briefly
before categorized
and placed into a drawer if
we did
that drive
I’d want to spread
out in the catbird seat
longer not that I’m a pearl girl
like her
more a
saguaro girl
stocky and slow to grow
flowers yet nurturing my arms
provide
shelter
do not thrive when
potted or besotted
he offers her stocks bonds if…I’d
settle
for just
stockings bonbons
she opens her silver
compact—powders refreshes her
red lips
